Job Description

The Polymer group at the Institute of Molecular Engineering (IME@Argonne) and Materials Science Division (MSD) at Argonne National Lab (ANL) is looking for a postdoctoral candidate to perform novel research exploring anti-biofouling materials for use in water purification systems. These materials are ampholytic polymers containing both positive and negative charges. The need in the field, which this postdoc will pursue, is to discover exactly what aspects of ampholytic polymers are most determinant of their anti-biofouling properties. The principal route to this exploration is synthesis of new polymers using the anionic polymerization set-up that has been established at Argonne.

The candidate will primarily be responsible for building, operating, and managing polymerization facilities and characterizing these materials as to their solvation, solution configuration, and anti-biofouling properties. The candidate is expected to seek collaborations with other scientists in MSD and IME@Argonne, as well as mentor graduate students from the Institute for Molecular Engineering at both ANL and UChicago.

The candidate is expected to publish results in refereed journals and make oral presentations at meetings, conferences, symposia, and seminars. They are expected to maintain a knowledge of the latest developments in the field and related groups through interactions and collaborative efforts. The candidate will also participate in maintaining technical reports and other documents associated with the operation of the optics lab, along with reports on experimental progress, technical developments, and new initiatives to peer reviews and program managers.

Minimum Education / Experience Requirements:

A Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or related field.

Additional Requirements:

Normal daytime work hours at the Argonne site, but occasional travel and some overtime/nighttime may be required. Ability to work without constant direction in the performance of routine tasks.

Considerable:

- Considerable experience in polymer synthesis is required.

- Considerable skill in written and oral communication.

- Good skills in collaboration and the ability to work with a team in an interdisciplinary

environment.

Good:

- Experience with characterization of polymeric materials, especially in solution. - Direct research experience applied polymer science

Desirable:

- Experience with chromatography and scattering techniques

- Experience with automation and computer interfacing

- Experience with advanced data analysis implemented in languages such as python or Matlab
