Job Description

We invite you to apply for a Postdoctoral Appointee position within our Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division (CSE). 

Under the guidance of a Lead Scientist you will:

  • Perform electrochemical testing coupled with synchrotron X-ray experiments.
  • Analyze data obtained from the testing and compare performance with similar analyses of competing materials. Prepare reports, presentations, and papers for regular project meetings.
  • Plans and conducts experiments to identify, characterize, develop and evaluate advanced materials and processes for battery electrochemical devices.
  • Conduct in situ and ex situ electrochemical experiments to understand materials and behavior of electrochemical battery cells and electrode interfacial chemistry/electrochemistry.
  • Conduct studies to understand battery performance, life, and durability to cycling and abuse studies.
  • Prepare summary reports and presents research to sponsors.
  • Contribute to progress reports and makes oral presentations at program/project reviews, and prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications

This position will be a term position that may be renewed for up to three years. 

We expect you to have:

  • Knowledge in the development of materials; metals, oxides, inorganic materials, and composites; interactions of these materials with each other and reactions under various conditions.
  • Knowledge of the physical and chemical principles underlying materials properties, phase equilibria, room temperature solid-state chemistry, thermodynamics and the experimental techniques and methodologies associated with these areas.
  • Skillful in building and testing batteries, and conducting analysis of cell performance. 
  • Skill in interpreting and assessing the results of the experimenters own work and that of others in experiments.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in performing experiments at a synchrotron X-ray source and analysis of data including crystal structure refinement.
  • Ability to keep abreast of pertinent scientific literature.
  • Experience with standard electroanalytical techniques and characterization instruments (SEM, TEM, FTIR and Raman) would be an asset.
  • This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in chemistry or materials sciences at the Ph.D. degree level with or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
